Team HighPoint and 50fortibet.org is a volunteer fundraising project for The Rowell Fund for Tibet. After Galen and Barbara Rowell’s death in 2002, The Rowell Fund was created in their honor. Its purpose is to help Tibetans communicate issues of importance to their community to a broader Tibetan or international audience and to preserve Tibetan culture in the face of the Chinese occupation. Every year, grants are given to Tibetans pursuing interests such as photography, film-making, writing, journalism, and projects that promote these skills within the Tibetan community.
Probably no issue symbolizes the environmental movement’s historical role in protecting the Earth’s natural wonders like its effort to preserve and restore Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park. Galen served on the advisory committee of Restore Hetch Hetchy from the beginning, and now Tony Rowell is on the committee himself.
The Rowell Legacy Fund was created by a group of friends and business associates in honor of the late Galen and Barbara Rowell to support the Rowell Award for the Art of Adventure. This award honors the adventurer whose artistic passion illuminates the wild places of the world, and whose accomplishments significantly benefit both the environment and the peoples who inhabit these lands and regions.
The International Campaign for Tibet’s (ICT) Board of Directors and close friends and family of the Rowells established a fund to carry on Galen and Barbara Rowell’s legacy in the Tibetan community. The purpose of the Rowell Fund for Tibet is to encourage and support the work of Tibetans communicating issues of importance to their community to a broader Tibetan or international audiences. A non-partisan, public interest group dedicated to promoting human rights and democratic freedoms for the people of Tibet. ICT believes that governments and people around the world need accurate information on current conditions in Tibet; that Tibetans are a “people” under international law and have the right to self-determination; that Tibet is an occupied country which has a distinct language, culture and religion; and, that dialogue between Tibetans and Chinese is integral towards finding a solution to the situation in Tibet.
